Zack Semke is the manager of business development at Hammer & Hand, a company specializing in high-performance building with offices in Washington and Oregon. Air managementThe air barrier for the project is a layer of OSB with taped seams (A), sandwiched between the existing 2×4 stud wall and a new 2×4 wall built immediately inboard. This location protects the air barrier from inadvertent occupant damage (nail holes from hanging artwork, for example) on into the future. This is the third of four posts delving into the anatomy of high-performance wall assemblies, beginning with the Karuna House in Oregon. This week’s post explains our approach at the Glasswood Passive House Retrofit. RELATED ARTICLES Creating High-Performance WallsHigh-Performance Walls, Part 2High Performance Walls, Part 4 Vapor managementBoth the OSB and EPS are vapor retarders, making the assembly semi-vapor permeable in both directions (B). The EPS warms the structural plywood sheathing so that moisture remains in vapor form and can diffuse out of the assembly harmlessly. The ventilated rainscreen cavity (A) adds modest drying capacity to this semi-permeable assembly, but its main purpose in this context is to dry the cladding and facilitate drainage of bulk water. Heat managementThe two 2×4 stud walls (B) are filled with high-density cellulose insulation for a combined center of cavity insulative value of R-26. Two inches of continuous EPS foam insulation (A) adds another R-9 to the assembly, and is only modestly thicker than the exterior insulation required by code. The sum of these three layers of insulation, plus sheet goods and air films, is R-33 (whole wall) or R-39 (center of cavity). Water managementThe Hardie siding (A) provides the first line of defense from water intrusion, with a rainscreen cavity (C) behind that allowing water to drain away. A layer of 60-minute building paper (B) provides the next line of defense, while a continuous layer of DensGlass sheathing immediately outboard of the EPS serves as the final water barrier and adds code-required fire resistance to the assembly. A little extra insulation, a second stud wall, and a bit of attention to detail on air sealing brought a code-required envelope retrofit into über-efficient Passive House territory.Next: The grand finale in our Evolution of Enclosure wall assembly series covers the Madrona Passive House. All four analyses are part of our building science exhibit, “Evolution of Enclosure,” that recently completed a 5-week showing at AIA Portland’s Center for Architecture. As a Passive House retrofit project (the first such effort on a commercial building in North America), Glasswood presented unique opportunities and challenges to solve for its high-performance wall assembly design. Because code already required new exterior insulation, structural sheathing, and added fire resistance, the extra effort to attain Passive House certification — air sealing and thicker insulation — was modest. But the team did need to figure out what to do with the existing stud wall.
In what is being seen as a reconciliatory move, Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday met his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, with whom he has been fighting a bitter battle, and invited him to a party meet to be held next week. The SP chief went to his father’s residence to invite him to the October 5 national executive meeting, party MLC Sunil Singh Yadav said.Though he did not elaborate on what transpired at the meeting — believed to be the first between the two in many months — it was being seen in the party as a reconciliatory effort by Akhilesh ahead of the crucial national conference.“Akhileshji met Netaji (Mulayam) to invite him for the meeting in Agra on October 5,” the MLC told PTI.Mr. Mulayam and his brother Shivpal Yadav were not invited to the party’s state executive meet held in Lucknow on September 23.Speculation was rife in political circles that the 77- year-old former chief minister was likely to announce a new outfit at a press conference along with the virtually defunct Lok Dal, while retaining the ‘Samajwadi’ tag in its name. While Mr. Shivpal had said he would declare his future course of action on September 25, a party leader said Mr. Mulayam did not read a press note at the press conference in which the formation of a new front was mentioned.“Netaji did not read the press note at the press conference. You must have noticed that Sharda Pratap Shukla (former SP MLA) was giving him a paper, which he did not read and said would read later. Now we will wait for the SP national executive meeting before deciding anything,” Lok Dal president Sunil Singh, who has offered the SP patriarch his party’s symbol and the president’s post, said.Mr. Mulayam said he was not forming a party “as of now” at the crowded press conference in Lucknow, responding to a volley of questions from the media on whether he was leaving the party he had formed 25 years ago.Despite the bitter battle for supremacy in the party, Mr. Mulayam had said, “My blessings are with him (Akhilesh Yadav) as he is my son, though I don’t agree with his decisions“.Mr. Akhilesh has sidelined Mulayam and Shivpal ever since he replaced his father as the party chief at a national convention here on Jaunary 1.Mr. Mulayam had said his son had promised to leave the party president’s post after staying at the helm for three months, but did not do so.“People who cannot stand up to their words cannot succeed,” he had said.Mr. Mulayam had last week replaced Akhilesh-loyalist Ram Gopal with Mr. Shivpal Yadav as the secretary of the Lohia Trust.Mr. Shivpal had announced in June he would float the Samajwadi Secular Front “to fight communal forces“.Taking full control of the party after being crowned head and alloted the SP’s ‘bicycle’ symbol by the EC on January 16, Mr. Akhilesh has been going full throttle, consolidating his grip over the party.

After making a huge splash at India Art Fair earlier this year with his 3-D sculptural installations in metal, Israeli artiste David Gerstein is all set to exhibit a body of new works in his first solo show in India. Titled Poetic Mirror, the show is being brought to India by Bruno Art Group and is curated by Alka Pande. Born in Jerusalem in 1944, Gerstein studied in Jerusalem, Paris, New York and London and started exhibiting his work in 1971. He uses a large spectrum of media such as wall sculptures, paper cuts, prints and photographs and other small objects. He is most famous for his large, Fauve -like outdoor installations, which are very much part of the Israeli landscapes. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Though Gerstein has already tasted success in the Indian market with many of his works being sold to Indian collectors post India Art Fair, this is the first time he will be visiting the country. Says the artist who is considered the pioneer of 3-D metal art: ‘Unfortunately, I have never been to India before but for many years, I have been reading about it and hearing stories or seeing films that it seems I know what India is like. My passion for colours always makes people inquire whether India helped determine my love for strong fresh colours which is so typical to the Indian culture. After all, the Mediterranean culture and heritage which we share with India brings us to the same strong sun and shadows. I’m sure India will look familiar to me from the very beginning. Some of my works involve a lot of details and are rich in colours which in recent years have disappeared from the art world trends.’ Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixYet, Gerstein admits he looks forward to watching the way ‘life is being performed on Indian streets, to smell the food and to see the wonderful craft that is being done everywhere. India and Israel share the same landscape and vegetation since the weather is closed but I am more interested in urban scenes than just landscape views,’ he says.’My art has always traversed its own path apart from trendy movements and I have stayed away from the ‘isms’, though often it’s been called ‘pop art’. I was a narrative artist from the very beginning and wanted to get people’s attention by representing the values I share with the common art lover. I want to share beauty and happiness and make people aware that there are great values we have as people and not just violence and disasters. After many years of creating narrative and figurative images, I wanted to extend the borders of painting and to give a new sculptural dimension to the so far illusionist look of the flat paintings. By slicing the view to multi layers, I achieved certain volume that was lacking in all the paintings that were done before.’ Among the works that will be on display during the show is the swirling 5th Avenue, a busy street scene inspired by the artist’s stay in New York. Happy Hours depicts the sensation of freedom overwhelming two bikers surrounded by a cloud of butterflies. The powerful Endless walk represents a multicoloured crowd of people walking along lines that form the infinity symbol. Gerstein’s works convey a sense of wonder and amusement at this fervour-ridden reality that is ours, and can be interpreted as a metaphor of life as a mad race. The Burning Lips pass on the feeling of softness of the lips or the sensation of its great sensitivity. Elegance is a comment about femininity and Peloton Wave is all about movement and the way the human figure is integrated with the mechanism of the bicycle. ‘Each image has its own story and solution.’WHERE: Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat CentreWHEN: 6 to 15 May, 10 am to 8 pm
